Letter: Let’s not open the door to extremists in our schools

Certain political forces have seized upon schools for their own power and gain — not the well-being of children, youth, and educators. Let’s think beyond party — and make sure we don’t miss out on devoted service and open the door to extremism in our schools.

In this school board election season, I feel compelled to remind citizens of the importance of these local elections – often overlooked or taken for granted.

It is not political parties that should dictate who governs our schools. There are caring, honest, and smart Democrats and Republicans running for office. We need to distinguish the untruthful “extremists” – the book banners and spreaders of misinformation and conspiracies – from the true candidates – those dedicated to safety, academics, policy, and community.

In two of our local communities there are non-partisan and bi-partisan coalitions that deeply care about the future of our schools. In Carlisle, the non-partisan coalition that will best serve the community is “Citizens for Carlisle Schools.” In the West Shore, there is a bi-partisan coalition called “Friends of West Shore” dedicated to serving students and families. Here are clear examples of candidates with no hidden political agenda, but will simply put children’s education first. Please research the candidates by these group names.

This is a critical time in the future of our schools and our democracy. It is going to take every single vote. We need to activate everyone we know to vote, so start talking to your friends, neighbors, and contacts to get the best candidates elected.

Certain political forces have seized upon schools for their own power and gain — not the well-being of children, youth, and educators. Let’s think beyond party — and make sure we don’t miss out on devoted service and open the door to extremism in our schools.
