Letter: Support for Citizens for Carlisle Schools

"Paula Bussard, Bruce Clash, Joe Shane, George Stroud and Jon Tarrant are the Citizens for Carlisle Schools. Their years of dedicated service to educating children have proven their sincerity. They know that solving problems requires working together and, whatever the problem, they will be part of the solution. They get my vote."

In the immortal words of George Burns, “The key to success is sincerity. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.”

This came to mind watching the recent candidate forum for the Carlisle school board. Most of the Team for Change candidates appeared to be sincere about their concerns. But it’s hard to believe that they were truly sincere about working to improve our children’s education because prior to running for school board as a purely partisan team, they did nothing to understand and address their expressed concerns.

In the seven years that I served on the school board, there were several occasions when parents, neighbors and community members came to me with concerns. They wanted to know why a particular problem occurred, what the school board and administration were doing about it, and how they could be part of the solution.

The Team for Change did none of that. Rather than working with our education leaders, they decided to work against them. So it’s not surprising that their campaign has been secretive, has attracted dark money from outside extremist political action committees, and has failed to state a coherent agenda for improvement.

Carlisle’s school board and administration actually understand the problems our students and families face. They do the work every day of trying to improve the education of every student. Despite many problems that other districts do not face, they achieve remarkable results and, I am confident, will continue to make steady improvement.

Paula Bussard, Bruce Clash, Joe Shane, George Stroud and Jon Tarrant are the Citizens for Carlisle Schools. Their years of dedicated service to educating children have proven their sincerity. They know that solving problems requires working together and, whatever the problem, they will be part of the solution. They get my vote.
