Letter: Vote for diverse offerings

George Stroud | The Sentinel

Nov 4, 2023

"As a school board member, I am committed to supporting a strong curriculum that builds basic skills, encourages innovative ideas and fosters a sense of belonging for all."

When choosing to live in Carlisle, a key factor was finding a school district that demonstrated a commitment to supporting the academic needs and interests of my own children. As a newly appointed member of, and candidate for, the Carlisle Area School Board, I am committed to supporting policies and programs that serve all students, including those who may have different learning styles, interests or abilities. It is my belief a quality public education must focus on building strong core skills (i.e., reading, writing, science and math) while also offering opportunities for those interested in developing advanced skills in the trades or technical fields. Partisan politics only distract from these goals and jeopardize our students’ futures.

The Carlisle Area School District is unique given the diverse socioeconomic, religious, ethnic and cultural demographics of our community. The programs offered at the middle and high school levels are equally unique. The Careers and Technology Education (CTE) curriculum is a shining example of innovative ideas by the staff that provide our students with unique pathways into various trade, technical and vocational careers. Through these programs, students are exposed to tools and experiences often only offered at the collegiate level, or earn certifications that allow them to enter the skilled workforce immediately upon graduation.

The strength of our school district is reflected in the dedicated faculty and staff who continue to develop initiatives to meet the needs of current and future students. As a school board member, I am committed to supporting a strong curriculum that builds basic skills, encourages innovative ideas and fosters a sense of belonging for all. On Nov. 7, I ask for you vote, along with my fellow candidates Paula Bussard, Bruce Clash, Joe Shane and Jon Tarrant for Carlisle Area School Board.
