Letter: Running for re-election

My name is Anne Lauritzen, and I am running for Carlisle Area School Board. A resident of Dickinson Township, I’m the proud mom of two CASD graduates, an active duty military veteran and a career development advocate who works with hundreds of local high school students throughout central PA. I’m often asked why, in these polarizing political times, do I want to serve on the school board? I only need to attend one of our student events or activities, volunteer in a classroom or meet with our proud parents and passionate teachers to give my answer — to serve our incredible students and beloved Thundering Herd community!

I have great pride in the fact Carlisle schools rank among the best in central PA. Our parents are happy with the quality education our schools provide, and our teachers love working here. But we face some tough challenges over the next four years, and I have plans to address them head on. My priorities will put students first: I want to emphasize career awareness so every student graduates with a career plan that’s right for them; guide the K-8 transformation to reduce class sizes and expand educational opportunities for all our students while ensuring community stakeholders continue to have a voice in the process; demand responsible budgeting of taxpayer dollars by prioritizing academic programs, student support services and critical infrastructure investments; continue to hold the administration accountable for improving student performance scores and graduation rates; and model civility and respect for our teachers, students and parents.

I believe Carlisle voters want a nonpartisan school board focused on good schools, great teachers and smart budgets — not political agendas. If that’s the kind of school director you’re looking for, I ask for your vote in the May 20 primary.
